Can memory tests traditionally done in sleep labs be moved into the home—with just a smartphone?

In this new paper, Perceptions of the Use of Mobile Apps to Assess Sleep-Dependent Memory in Older Adults With Subjective and Objective Cognitive Impairment, the research team explored how older adults feel about using a prototype app to assess memory changes that occur overnight.

📱🧠 Through two focus groups with individuals aged 50+, the study identified:

  • Barriers to using the app, including concerns about data accuracy, human connection, and ease of use
  • Facilitators, such as flexibility, simplicity, and support options
  • Diverse preferences, highlighting that while some users need more hands-on help, others are confident navigating the technology independently

The findings point to the importance of designing digital health tools that adapt to the varying needs of older users. As remote health monitoring continues to grow, incorporating user feedback like this is key to creating accessible and effective tools.
